I Love Christmas!

Christmas has come and gone, and the New Year is fast approaching. I can't believe how fast the year has gone by. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas with their family and loved ones. We spent Christmas Eve at my cousins' house in San Jose. After eating good food, we watched the kids open their presents. John played Santa, distributing the presents one by one to everyone--each person taking his or her turn opening a present. Of the years past, this has got to be the family's most orderly gift exchange!

Then, back at the apartment, Sinta, Lil' Brudder, and I opened our gifts from one another. Can I just say we were all surprised with the gifts we recieved? Santa was good to us!

Christmas Day was celebrated with Sinta's family. After breakfast, we exchanged gifts and opened presents. Later in the afternoon, we opened presents again, then prepared for dinner. As we sat around eating dinner, which consisted of a crab salad, roast, a rack of lamb (two, actually), cream of brocolli soup, and veggies, we watched "Mad Hot Ballroom".

It's times like this when I miss my parents and family back home in the Philippines.

Of Lazy Days and Body Aches

It's been a while since I sat down and really blogged about what's going on. Ever since school let out, I just wanted to spend my time doing things I didn't get to do during the semester--like curl up on the couch and read a good book. Of course, with the holidays and all, I tried to enjoy as much of it as I could, which I did. I finally have my days off, and I've been spending those days vegging on the couch watching TV, and reading a book.

My throat's itchy; I'm coughing, and my body's achy. It's been this way for about three days now, and I'm anxiously waiting for it to become a full-blown sickness while I still have my days off (this weekend). Maybe it will just pass me over.
There are no plans for New Year's Eve yet. I guess it depends on how we're all feeling, physically. There's supposed to be a storm coming our way. It's been in the news for days, according to the Bay Area's notorious "Storm Tracker". It barely rained here in the South Bay, but I think the North Bay got the brunt of the storm. At any rate, if the storm reaches us tomorrow, it wouldn't be such a bad idea to stay in tomorrow and make it a Blockbuster night.

Counting Down To Christmas (Part II)

Counting Down To Christmas

Sinta and I were in San Francisco the other night to check out the holiday hustle and bustle, as well as partake in the shopping and Christmas light-seeing. The windows to check out were Macy's at Union Square, sponsored by the SPCA.

The window exhibit displayed cute little puppies, and rambunctious kittens--all up for adoption. The backdrop was of a downtown street where all the animals "hang out". It was later in the evening when we got there when the SPCA van arrived to pick up the animals for the night. The night air was still humid and warm from the day's rain, but it was a perfect night to check out the lights around Union Square.

The Year In Review (Unofficial)

Lately, I've been seeing this in a lot of blogs: Review your year's worth of blog entries. Take the last sentence of your first entry of the month, and cut and paste it for your "Year In Review" entry.

Rho's Babble...

January: The rainy days give me a good opportunity to read "The Da Vinci Code".

February: It was enough to wake up my senses this morning.

March: Okay, who hid the mouse in the palm plant?

April: May all your dreams and wishes come true!

May: I really should get out of the house.

June: And when I did, he was prancing around his owner's front lawn. Goodness...

July: It would be anticlimactic for me to write about my days without the fancy descriptions. Whatever...

August: Like a young kid dreading school to start, I don't want summer to end.

September: Personally, I'm a fan of the '80s, and the early '90s.

October: What are yours?

November: Regardless, I think it's cool I have a "cousin" in class.

December: Time to get back to phenyl ethyl alcohol agar, fluid thioglycollate, and all that lovely stuff.

Someone Just Snuck Up On Me

7 In the Morning
7 In the Morning,
originally uploaded by Rho.
I'm glad the semester's over. I woke up around 5:30 this morning to study a little. Headed out by 7. I just wanted to get the exam over with. Good thing it was scheduled for the early morning.

With that done, the rest of my day was free. Today is the first time in 17 weeks that I got a day when I don't have to go to school or work. I was literally sitting on the couch twidling my thumbs because I didn't know what to do. That's not to say that I don't have things to do, or want to do.

Fireball In the Sky
Originally uploaded by Rho.
At the top of my list is to open the box that holds "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". It's been in its original packaging since I pre-ordered it from Amazon last July. I'd also like to finish up some of the crochet projects I've started a while back, as well as try to teach myself how to knit. Of course, there's the Christmas shopping, the driving around the neighborhood to look at the Christmas lights, and maybe even ice skating. That would be fun.

Oh, and the other mission: look for a Christmas present for Sinta.

One and a Half
One and a Half,
originally uploaded by Rho.
For lunch today, Sinta and I went to Quizno's. I love pepperonccini with my sandwiches, and I will eat them whole; but Sinta started teasing me when he saw the remnants of my peppers.

Sinta: Why did you eat only half of the peppers?
Me: I didn't want to eat the seeds. They're hot.

That's a lie. I'll eat 'em to the nub of the stem. I just didn't feel like it today.
Wooohooooo!

I just took my last final exam of the semester early this morning, and I can finally, finally, FINALLY! enjoy the Holiday Season!! Since I still have the whole day ahead of me, I'm planning to hit the malls for some Christmas shopping.

Embrace Change

I got this email forward from ,F, a very close and dear friend...

Things happen for a reason...

In life, we are always setting goals for ourselves and working to make them happen. This gives us focus and ensures that we use our time and energy efficiently and effectively. It also provides us with a sense of purpose and direction. We know where we are going and what we want to do. But quite often, due to forces outside our control, things do not go as we had planned--the flat tire on the way to the wedding, the unforeseen flu virus--and we have to adjust to a postponement or create a whole new set of circumstances. Even positive turns of fortune---an unexpected influx of cash or falling in love--require us to be flexible and to reconsider our plans and priorities, sometimes in the blink of an eye. This is what happens when life throws you a curve ball.

The ability to accept what is happening and let go of your original expectations is key when dealing with these unexpected turns of fate. We have a tendency to get stuck in our heads, clinging to an idea of how we think life should go, and we can have a hard time accepting anything that doesn't comply with that idea. The fact is that life is unpredictable. The trip you thought was for business--and when the
deal fell through, you got depressed --- actually landed you at the airport two days earlier than planned so you could meet the love of your life. Your car breaks down, and you are late for an appointment. While it's true that you never arrive at that important meeting, you end up spending a few relaxing hours with people you would never have met otherwise.

In order to keep us awake to opportunity and to teach us equanimity, the universe throws us the occasional curve ball. Remember that curve balls are not only life's way of keeping us awake, which is a gift in and of itself; they are also often life's way of bringing us wonderful surprises. Next time a curve ball comes your way, take a deep breath, say thank you, and open your mind to a new opportunity. Swing away!

Storm Clouds
Storm Clouds,
originally uploaded by Rho.
If you could see my surroundings right now, you'd see papers and notes for microbio strewn all over the place. Finals week is fast approaching.

A rain strom passed through the Bay Area yesterday. It was crazy. It was so windy, and the rain was pouring, that it reminded me of the Philippines when there was bagyo. At work, the patio furniture in the courtyard were all over the place (haha! Just like my work area right now!) We were supposed to get our Christmas tree last night, but there was no way we were going to brave the storm. Sike! I take that back! Sinta and I went out for dinner, and then hit the mall for some Christmas shopping. Unfortunately, no names were crossed of our list. It's the same problem every year: what to get? what to get?

Oh, well...it's getting late. Time to get back to phenyl ethyl alcohol agar, fluid thioglycollate, and all that lovely stuff.

Belated Happy Turkey Day!

Me and Jo
Originally uploaded by Rho.
As belated as this is, I hope everyone had a wonderful and joyous Thanksgiving! Unfortunately, Sinta worked that day, but I went to visit him at work before I headed over to my cousin's house in Santa Clara. It's been months since I've seen the pamilya. The kids aren't "kids" anymore; they're all growing up so fast. For dinner, we had turkey and all the good fixin's. Afterwards, we all sat around, catching up on each other's lives. At the same time, I talked with my nieces and nephews, "fishing" for hints as to what they want for Christmas. All in all, it was a good night.

I had to work yesterday, so I missed the after-Thanksgiving sales. I mean, I could've hit the stores before I went to work at ten, but since sleeping in for me is few and far between, I decided to sleep in instead. After I got off from work, Sinta and I headed for the Great Mall to get some Christmas gift ideas. Instead, we watched "Walk the Line". All I can say is, go watch it!

Good Going...

Candies Galore
Originally uploaded by Rho.
I came home from work this afternoon, and cleaned the apartment. Then, I played online for a little while until I fixed myself some Top Ramen for dinner (don't lie, you know it's good stuff!). Now, with plenty of time on my hands tonight, I thought I'd get ahead of the game and start my part of my group's physiology lab report that's due later this week.

So, here I am in front of the computer, looking over my questions when I realize that I need the class' experiment data to answer the questions. Our instructor had emailed the spreadsheet to each of us last week. Well, guess what? Earlier, while I was cleaning out my inbox, I erased his email. Go figure. I email my lab group in hopes that one of them will forward the data to me soon, especially now that I'm motivated to actually do some school work.

In the meantime, I think I'll dip my hand in the candy jar.

Our 2nd Year: Part II

Anniversary Twilight
Originally uploaded by Rho.
On our anniversary night, Sinta took me to Guaymas, this authentic Mexican restaurant nestled in the hills of Tiburon. The restaurant overlooks the Bay into the skyline of San Francisco. It was a perfect night.

Guaymas is known for their seafood, and that's just what Sinta and I ordered. We started off with fresh guacamole and chips, along with steaming fresh tortilla and various sampler dips. Then we had our main course. Sinta had the Jalea Puerto Nuevo, which consisted of deep-fried seafood (fresh white fish, tender calamari, scrumptious shrimp), topped with red onion, jalapeno and lime juice, and Mojo de Ajo dressing. I had the Camarones al Chipotle--fresh shrimp sauteed in chipotle sauce, garlic, onions, and sour cream. All I can say is, "Yum!!" We couldn't pass up the dessert, so we had Flan de Coco. Nuthin' like smooth flan, topped with toasted coconut. Yummy!

All in all, it was a great weekend...Thank you, Baby.

Our 2nd Year: Part I

Sinta and I just celebrated our two years together. We started out our "anniversary weekend" by attending Brian Gore's "International Guitar Night" at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga. Read Sinta's entry, "International Guitar Night" to get the story. I couldn't have written it any better. Anyway, the initial reason why we were there was to watch the ukulele extraodinaire Jake Shimabokuro (though the three other musicians were maestros!).

While they were doing their sound checks, Sinta and I were hanging outside the entrance, enjoying our snacks from the concession stand. Just then, a Japanese guy walks out of the building.

Sinta: Look, it's Jake.

I turn my head. The guy didn't look like Jake, so I turn my attention back to my Cheetos.

Sinta: Just kidding. That's Jake's brother. He's an ukulele player, too.

After a few minutes, Sinta and I stand and get closer to Jake's brother.

Me: Hmmm...he has the same eyes as Jake. He even sound like Jake.

Then, two women go up to the guy with their newly-purchased Jake DVDs. He signs the DVDs.

Me: Why are they getting Jake's brother to sign them?

Okay, by now, you'd think that I would've figured out that "Jake's brother" is really Jake; but, I had to get confirmation from the two women. When I asked them if it was really Jake, they looked at me as if I was stupid. Hey, Jake Shimabokuro was sporting a new look--longer hair, no glasses, t-shirt and jeans, and cowboy boots.

We finally go up to meet Jake. I've never met anyone famous before (unless you count Father MC), but Jake was approachable and very friendly.

Overall, the show was great. I think the mainlanders took a liking to Jake. After all, he did receive a standing ovation. After the show, I saw a guy approach Jake, and said, "Hey, man. I have a new found respect for the yoo-kuh-lay-lee."

Dear Weekend, I Miss You

I miss my weekends. I miss sleeping in and waking up late. I miss having brunch on a late Sunday morning.

Brunch.

Sinta's cooking brunch at work. Our client I just talked to on the phone is waiting to be picked up by a friend who's taking her to brunch. All I can think of is having that melt-in-your-mouth pancakes drizzled with warm maple syrup, accompanied with all the fixin's--bacon and over easy eggs, and hash browns. Can't forget that cup of coffee.

I'm making myself hungry. Too bad my work doesn't offer brunch for us. Oh, well. I'll have to succumb to the salad bar and the soup of the day.

Working on the weekends is a small price to pay for what's to come in the future.

Of Blog Breaks and "It's a Small World"

White Orchid
White Orchid,
originally uploaded by Rho.
Okay, I had to take a break from homework and studying. This last week hasn't been too bad. Work was alright--didn't have to work overtime, which was good. School is starting to get busy again with upcoming exams and lab reports--all due within a week of each other. But believe it or not, after twenty-some years, I'm finally learning how not to procrastinate. Yes, I'm slowly, ever so slowly, learning the art of time management.

Last Tuesday night, I attended my first session of advanced hula. I thought beginners' class was tough, this one is a real workout! In addition, the class is more strict. And on top of that, we have to learn Hawaiian words, in which we get drilled for. Yikes! Nevertheless, I'm real excited, and everyone is very friendly. It made the transition easy.

That night was a night of coincidences and circumstance. Before class, I was talking to two of my classmates. We were talking about Hawaii, and where we were from, when I said, "Yeah, I went to Radford High".

"No way!" said L. "I'm class of 95!"

"What?! So am I!!" What a trip, huh? We didn't know each other back then, but we had mutual friends. Talk about reminiscing! Crazy...Who wudda thunk?

And then, I found out that another fellow hula dancer shares something in common with me. Her maiden name is my last name. My last night is not common. Her family is originally from a province north of ours in Luzon. From what my relatives have told me before, there is another huge family in that province who shares our surname. I wonder if and how we're related. Regardless, I think it's cool I have a "cousin" in class.

For the Sake of Blogging

Can I stay home, and sleep in? Can I curl up on the couch with a good book? Can I not do homework, and just crochet a scarf?

It's beginning to look and feel like fall outside--foggy, wet, and cold. I'd love to just stay home, and lounge around in my PJs. That would be nice.

A Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down

I finally found the time to actually sit down in front of my computer and blog. It's been quite the seven days recently. All last week, we were understaffed at work. Last Monday, my manager called, and asked me if I could come in at 6am (two hours before my regular shift) on Tuesday. Without thinking, I said yes. I'm not a morning person, but the payoff was great--I got to go home earlier than usual. Late lunch breaks, and a migraine or two later...I hope this week will be better.

Of course, school had to be stressful as well. The commute to school is an ordeal in itself. Traffic on 280 seems to get worse each day. The drivers are pure crazy; they just perpetuate my belief that some of the Bay Area drivers are just insane. And then, for the past couple of days, I studied for my second Microbio midterm, which I took this afternoon.

But despite all that, the little things I got to do here and there made the week go by faster...

1. Sinta and I found this yummy Salvadorian restaurant that serves pupusas, as well as other fare, such as chimichangas, and burritos.
2. Junk food with Lil' Brudder.
3. I did a little clothes shopping.

And...

Tonight, I was promoted to the advanced hula class! I didn't see this coming...but all I can say is that I'm excited!

I guess it wasn't such a bad week after all.

I Stand Corrected

Sinta brought it to my attention that I misquoted him on my last post.

Sinta: You're a social ice cream eater, aren't you?

Sinta: I'll have some...as long as you're just a social ice cream eater.

The Week In Review

Well, there's really not much to add to the "Week in Review", since my time revolves around work and school. Last Sunday, Sinta, his mom, and I went to watch the last Giants game of the season. We couldn't ask for a more beautiful day up in the City. It was a pretty exciting game against the Diamondbacks. Moises Alou hit a home run. JT Snow, much to the dismay of the girls, said his parting words at the end of the game. Is he, or isn't he, coming back next season. And to top it all off, we grubbed on ballpark food--sausage dogs, nachos, and garlic fries. We're not talking about bullcrap garlic powder on fries. We're talking about tons of fresh, minced garlic on top of steak fries! Ain't nuthing like junk food at SBC! And, oh yeah, the Giants ended the season with a win over the Diamondbacks.

The Giants' last game of the season. No, I didn't catch Barry Bonds' homerun ball because he didn't play that day. Is this his last season with the team?

Cañada College

In light of Sinta's last post, I thought I'd post photos of the view from the school...In the foreground is the small town of Emerald Hills. Got money?

Here's another photo of the Bay. Can you see the salt ponds at the edge of the Bay?

My Turn...

I got this from Consuela's blog: "What movie can you watch over and over again and never get tired of?"

Here are my faves:

Amelie
Alladin
Sixteen Candles
Breakfast Club
Top Gun
Jerry McGuire
Happiness of the Katakuris

Go Lokeliko, It's Your Birthday

Ghost Theatre
Originally uploaded by Rho.
Last Tuesday, we celebrated Lokeliko's birthday by taking him out for dinner at this Italian restaurant called Frankie, Johnnie & Luigi Too! here in Mountain View. Sinta and the Birthday Boy won the "Best Dish", hands down, with their baked ziti. I had the chicken in tomato and basil sauce, which was yummy, too. After dinner, we went to a 3-screen movie theatre out in San Jose to see Wong Kar Wai's 2046. Apparently, only very few screens across the country are playing this movie (if it's playing in your city, watch it). By the time the movie was over, nobody was in the lobby. As in, there were no employees in sight. We could have very well dug our hands into the candy bin, and took a few bags of it home. It was pretty eerie walking out into a fully lit, but empty movie lobby. All in all, it was a good night.

Of Lunch and Bees

Pulgas Temple II
Originally uploaded by Rho.
Sinta came to meet me for lunch today. We went to the local deli near the school, and ordered a roast beef sandwich for lunch. Then, we drove down the road to the Pulgas Temple for a picnic. We were settled down, enjoying our lunch, when all of a sudden, a bee decided to check out our food. Then another one came, and then another. Now, I'm not scared of bees, but when they start to hover over my hand, trying to get a piece of my lunch, then, we have a problem. I refused to move because I didn't want to get stung, but they were relentless. Sinta had to literally pull me away. Me, running around with half a roast beef sandwich with all the fixin's. I've never been that scared of bees before! Talk about an awkward moment.

!!Happy Birthday!!!

Here's an advanced birthday greeting to Little Brudder who's not so little anymore. Though, you'll always be my "ading". He'll be celebrating his special day tomorrow. Oh, the joys of youth...

Fall Is In the Air on Castro Street

I headed early out the door this morning for work. With 45 minutes to spare before I was due at the cubicle farm, I decided to stop by Castro Street for some coffee. With the sun just coming up, tinting the buildings with shades of golden hues, it just hit me that fall is officially here. People were bundled up in scarves and beanies, walking their dogs, or enjoying a cup of coffee at the local cafe. Castro Street in the early morning is such a comforting contrast from the usual busy afternoon of individuals walking along, and casual sidewalk diners enjoying meals at their favorite restaurants. That's not to say that I don't like Castro Street in the afternoons. I love it, period.

Sinta and I spend a fair amount of time there. Just this past summer, especially when the weather is just right, we would make our culinary pilgrimages to Castro. We'd be the casual sidewalk diners, and enjoy falafels and a good Mediterranean meal. Sometimes, our cravings for sweet goodies would set in, and we'd opt for gelato or boba.

Now than the air is getting crisper, and it's a little nippier out, walking along Castro may become less and less. It's hot chocolate season again.

The Water Temple

Pulgas Temple
Originally uploaded by Rho.
On Wednesday, Sinta came up to the school, and met me for lunch. Since I happened to have a longer break in between classes that day, we decided to take a drive on the backroads, with Hwy 280 on one side, and Crystal Springs Reservoir on the other. We drove through rolling hills, and lush green trees. Check out the pictures in the link. I can only imagine that this was how the California wilderness looked like before the settlers came. We stopped by the Pulgas Water Temple, which commemorates the engineering feat that provides Hetch Hetchy water to the Bay Area from the Sierras (160 miles away). The temple is surrounded by manicured lawns where you can relax, have a picnic, and walk the trails around the reservoir. The great thing about this park is that it's not that far from school. It's an ideal place to go for lunch!

Shopping Housewives & New Shoes

Yesterday, Sinta and I went to Santana Row. To be there on a weekday afternoon is like watching reality TV. Housewives were meeting other housewives, doing lunch, toting their Burberry purses, armed and shopping-ready with their rich husbands' credit cards. Anyway, we left with new pairs of shoes each. Because I had no place on the shoe rack to put my shoes, I had to let a part of the Imelda Marcos in me go, and *gasp*, sift through my shoes. I'm donating five pairs. Not bad for a start, huh?

Anyway, here's wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

Now That I Can Breathe A Little...For Now

I thought I'd blog. Or at least try to. It's been one heck of a two weeks. When I have the time, I would sit down in front of the computer to blog, but I'd just be too damn tired to do anything. The only thing I do on my spare time is veg in front of the TV. That's a partial lie. I'm all "Law & Order"ed out now.

Here's a recap of the past two weeks:
1. Sinta and I volunteered about 12 hours of our time to the Red Cross.
2. Work, work, and politics at work.
3. We spent a lot of time at a cafe on Castro St. studying for our classes.

Speaking of classes, I took my Microbiology exam this afternoon. Ugh...I don't think I did well.

Anyway, my life sounds boring right now. But, that's not to say that I don't take time out to save my sanity. Sinta and I still find the time to go out on dates. Lol!...We rent movies. We even went to Ikea the other day.

I'm putting away my text books and hi-liters away for a couple of days. In the meantime, while the warm weather is back, I'm going to enjoy the rest of the week. Here's to a wonderful week to everyone!

Coffee, Please?

I just had to take a break from studying to fool around online. My first midterm is coming up on Monday, and I still have a lot of material to look over. This is what I get, of course, for procrastinating.

Not Enough Hours In a Day

Six and a half hours at school today.
Five hours at the San Francisco RC Chapter tonight, greeting volunteers and evacuees.
Forty-five minutes to drive home.
Thirty minutes to print out my quiz and study guide.
Five minutes to blog.
Fifteen minutes to eat ice cream.

Doing Our Part

Sinta and I spent six hours yesterday at the Oakland Red Cross. Originally, we were there for the call center training. But because the evacuees were (and are) there, the directors switched the training to family services. In other words, we received a crash course on family services intake, and assessing their immediate needs. We were excited. Here's our chance to work with and help the victims of the affected areas. Unfortunately, by the time training ended, the families there were already taken care of. So, Sinta and I took care of the phones at the call center. It looks like we'll be volunteering for the next couple of months.

My heart goes out to the people who were affected. It tears me when I see pictures and footages of the devestation. For me, it hits a little closer to home--my family and I have lived right outside of New Orleans when I was in early elementary school. I remember preparing for hurricanes, and experiencing close calls. I remember the minor floods caused by Hurricane Juan in 1985. I can recall how scared I was about the possibilities of a hurricane making landfall. But I can only imagine what the people in the gulf coast are experiencing now.

On A Lighter Note...

Sinta and I had a yummy dinner tonight at The Cheesecake Factory. Of course, we made room for dessert; and, this time, it didn't take us a long time to decide on which cheesecake to order. Our server made it easy for us. She suggested the Godiva Chocolate cheesecake, and that's what we ordered. No regrets! It was yum-o!

A Dog Day Afternoon

I finally got a day off today. I figured I'd sleep in till noon. I'm such a dork, though; I got up at 8:30 this morning. I guess my body's used to getting up early every single day. I made the most of my morning by cleaning the apartment and doing other chores. After lunch, I vegged on the couch in front of the TV and fell asleep. Nice. But not as relaxing as listening to Sinta play the ukulele under the shade of a tree on a hot summer afternoon. That's nice.

And on the Seventh Day, She Worked

I see the next four months to be very busy for me. As I've mentioned, I'm back in school. I've essentially given up my days off by going to school two days a week, and working full-time for the rest of the five days. This should be interesting. Between work, school, and hula, this experience should be a great exercise for time-management.

I started my first Saturday at work today. Because our department is usually quiet on the weekends, and I'm basically working on my own, it makes the day go by faster. It's weird, because it still feels like a weekday, and my usual TV routine is off. The TV schedule is, of course, on the weekend schedule. Oh, boy...Am I crazy to try to pull off a seven-day schedule?

It Ain't No Foul Ball

The SF Giants @ SBC Park

Last night, Sinta and I watched the Giants play the Mets. All I can say is, "Brrrrrrrrr!" The wind chill was just COLD! Me, wearing a thick crocheted scarf in August? Only in San Francisco. The game was pretty uneventful, except for the girls in the crowd screaming for JT Snow. Were they there as Giants fans, or as JT fans? At the top of the 6th, we were sipping on hot chocolate and snacking on a pretzel, when all of a sudden, I heard a thump, thump, and this girl's head was next to me on the bleacher! A bunch of us looked up, and apparently, drunk homegirl fell from two aisles up! Poor girl. She seemed okay when her friends pulled her up. She probably didn't remember what happened when she woke up this morning. Ouch. We left during the 8th inning since we wanted to beat the crowds to Caltrain. We didn't miss much. The Mets won 2-1.

    I'm Still Alive

I haven't blogged in more than a week, much less-blog hopped on my "Daily Reads". A lot has happened in the last week or so. Here's the rundown:

Mini-Vacation. Sinta, his family, and I spent last weekend in San Diego. It was a much needed break from work. We did some sight-seeing, ate a lot of food; I saw my old college friends. I'll write more details about the weekend with pictures to follow.

Goodbye, Weekend! Goodbye!. Fall semester started yesterday, and I am back to school. I'm taking my pre-reqs for nursing. They're two sciences classes, each one with a lecture and lab. When I told my supervisor and manager about my schooling, they wondered about my commitment with the organization; but, when I offered to work for the weekends, they were thrilled. My manager described it as a "huge" change in the scheduling. At least now, my co-workers who have families won't bitch about working on the weekends. I don't have my weekends, but the way I look at it, my 7-day schedule lets me off early in the afternoon.

A Midnight Run To NASA For a Space Shuttle Landing

    Space Shuttle's Path

Considering that we are literally two minutes away from NASA, it didn't sound like a bad idea. But, mind you, it was already midnight, and I was a little woozy from the Cabernet. Plus, I had work at 8am. But, considering again, the space shuttle mission is a large part of my generation. It may be grounded after this mission. We thought it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

In the meantime, we walked around to look at the exhibits, such as the Mars Rover exhibits, the actual space suits used in the Mercury and Gemini space missions, and the Mercury space shuttle. By the time we made the round, I was literally teetering on my feet. I was dead tired. By then, we decided to call it a night...or an early morning.

Thank goodness the shuttle crew landed this morning safe and sound.

    Malasadas

Some of us girls in hula class yesterday were having a discussion about malasadas. One of the girls mentioned that a new Hawaiian BBQ restaurant in the East Bay offers malasadas, and that they're pretty good. We all got excited (because malasadas are few and far between out here); but, unfortunately, she couldn't remember the name of the restaurant. I guess, in a way, it's good that she forgot the name. Otherwise, it would be dangerous for me. I'd be there everyday! One thing's for sure, though. Nothing beats Leonard's Malasadas.

"Excuse Me? Where'd You Get Those Malasadas?"

Our mission, when Sinta and I got to the Aloha Festival, was to look for malasadas, Hawaii's version of doughnut holes. We headed for the food booths; but, to no avail, we didn't see any one selling them. We were disappointed. No big deal, thought. I figured that malasadas aren't popular here in the mainland, anyway. So we mosied our way down the booths, looking at the t-shirts, stickers, and ukuleles that the vendors had for sale. As, I was looking at an ipo, I saw a girl in front of me eating something round, and covered with sugar. Could that be a malasada?

"She's eating a malasada!" I exclaimed to Sinta, in a hushed whisper through my teeth.

"Go ask her! If you don't, I will," Sinta said. So, I asked the girl, and she happily pointed us back towards the direction of the food booths.

"They're at the green tent," she said. Woohoo! Sinta and I headed back there, and we ran! We literally ran to the green tent! Much to our delight, we were greeted with a short line, unlike the plate lunch and shave ice booths where a gajillion people were lining up. We ended up getting one brown bag each. Each bag contained half a dozen of those sugary, doughy goodness. Needless to say, we were happy!

As we were walking around, a guy tapped me on the shoulder and asked, "Excuse me? Where'd you get the malasadas?"

    Talk about "word-of-mouth" advertising!

How Do You Make Rho Smile?

At the festival, I had my eyes on a raglan tee, and a pair of shorts. Long story short, none of the vendors had my size. I was so bummed! It's the story of my life. When I go shopping, I have a difficult time finding my size. And when you have your heart set on something, it's especially disappointing. I did find a booth that was selling the shorts for almost twice the price of the other vendor, and I wasn't about to pay that kind of money. I was bitching about the experience the whole time.

The car ride back to Sinta's parents house was a quiet one. I thought we were taking the scenic route, until Sinta asked, "Do you think Pollyann's ice cream will cheer you up?" Wow! Isn't he sweet? He knows how to put a smile on my face! Thank you, Baby! I got over the experience real quick!

    Hawaii For a Day

It's not the real thing, but it will do. Sinta and I are going up to the City today for the San Francisco Aloha Festival. Bring on the Hawaiian plate lunches!

Of Food Fantasies and Bags of Chips

Tonight, I saw a commercial with a lady who was filling up her grocery cart with tons of stuff. It reminded me of when I was in grade school. When my brother and I would accompany our mom to go grocery shopping, we weren't allowed to fill the cart with junk food. I mean, we were allowed to have cookies, chips, ice cream, and what not...but, we couldn't have them as the main staple of our meal (Eww, vegetables! What's that?!). Mom had a strict rule that if we opened a package of cookies, we had to finish it before we could open another one.

And then at night, I'd fantasize that I'd go to the local grocery store, and have it shut down just for me. I would take my shopping cart and breeze through the aisles, grabbing all the Chips Ahoy, Cheetos, Doritos, and all the other bad stuff to my greedy heart's content.

    I still fantasize about it.

Mom had a strict rule that if Younger Brother and I opened a a package of cookies, or a bag of chips, we had to finish it before we could open another one. I know exactly where this rule stemmed from. Mom caught me opening a new bag of Cheetos, when she said that I had another bag that I should finish. Defiant, little me said that there wasn't another bag. Then, Mom reached into the pantry, and produced six different bags of Cheetos and Doritos--all of the bags halfway empty, and tied with twisty ties. Oops!

"But they're all stale!" I said.

"Exactly," replied Mom. "That's why I suggest you finish a bag first before opening a new one."

    Summa!!

I can't believe it's already August. Ever since summer school ended last Thursday, Sinta and I have been taking full advantage of the warm weather. We've been hanging out on Castro Street for falafels and gyros, hot chocolate at a local coffee shop, and late afternoon strolls. Like a young kid dreading school to start, I don't want summer to end.

I Peed In My Pants This Afternoon

Sugar, I don't know why you still blame the website. Do you not know how to close your browser?

Did you take the last census? I spoke to at least two people about it, and skin color was not an indicator of race or ethnicity.

Let me ask you this. What exactly did you ask J that started all of this? Do you agree with the census indicator of skin color? You're so passionate about it, so I guess you are.

And I wouldn't give a f**k if someone talked shit about me. Just don't come on my blog and call me an ass and a cow. You can dedicate a whole blog about me and talk all the shit you want, and I won't care because it's you personal blog. I will respect that. Name calling is for kids.

And this is why I can laugh at you, my dear Sugar: If you're such an ADVOCATE in RESEARCHING FACTS, then you would have done your homework and know that J is a male. And don't you dare say that I "don't know what's obviously going on" because J is my boyfriend. I know EXACTLY what's going on.

Really, Sugar, go vent on your own blog.

Some People Can Be Real Comedians

For those who have been following J's blog, and mine as well, you know about the "hot topic".

This person left a comment on J's blog that just opened a big can of worms. I was going to have my own little tirade, but I won't.

She blames a website for the whole mess.

Sugar, one of your comments states: "I didn't dare come into your blog. You are listed in Blog Explosion, for crying out loud, do I have a friggin' choice if your site forces itself onto my screen while I'm surfing for credits??? Now, I cannot help that, can I?"

I love how you blame BlogExplosion. YOU DO HAVE A CHOICE. Did the website threaten you that it would detonate your computer if you didn't read it? You could block the site, you know. You're so funny, I almost peed in my pants.

Come on now, you say that you don't know why you're wasting your time trying to explain to us some point of yours (and you are entitled to it). We never asked you to. You can't tell someone who or what he or she is. How can you say that the skin color "is an important guage" of what a person is? Who considers that? You? Be careful with what you say. I wouldn't want to be you if I crossed someone with that comment.

And I bet you're obsessing over this issue. From your novel-length comments, I say you are. Maybe you should go out and explore the world instead of wasting your time (as you say) making people understand you points and criticizing "annoying" templates that don't satisfy your anal ways.

The One About the Wannabe Over-Achiever

Have you ever met someone that just rubs you the wrong way?

Sinta and I spent the day with our "organization" who participated at a corporate track meet. First of all, I have to say that Sinta did a wonderful job today! I'm proud of you, Baby! Anyway, the team was made up of members from different chapters around the area. The person who organized the team is a member of our chapter. Maybe she doesn't remember that I'm a member as well, but I got this feeling from her that I'm inferior because she thinks I'm not. I've met her before, but I guess since I don't hold a certain "position" at the chapter, I'm not a member in her eyes. I remember thinking that members like me are considered out of the loop. Of all the members (all were participants in the races) there, she was the one who disregarded me. Everyone else was friendly. She didn't listen to me when I would tell her something. Whatever. During the two times she did talk to me, her back was turned. Didn't your mother teach you that you should look at the person to whom you're speaking to?

Homegirl just rubs me the wrong way. If I could describe her, she would be Reese Witherspoon's over-achieving character in "Election", but worse. She had this 3-inch ring binder dedicated to the track meet. She cheered everyone on with her high-pitched voice. I was having this horrible migraine because of the 100 degree weather, as if someone was pulling my right eyeball out; and, I swear, if someone was pulling it out, I'd throw it straight at her to keep her quiet. Her bubbliness made me want to puke.

After the meet, I took pictures of the team on the field. Because she and Sinta were the two representatives who competed from our chapter, she wanted a picture together. "Yeah!" she said. "We could post it on the website! I have your email, so I can send the picture to you! I'll send it to the whole chapter!" I don't have to worry about that since, for some reason, my email address somehow got dropped from their mailing list. So Sinta, called me over to take the picture with them. I simply refused to. Then, another guy from another chapter said I should join them since I am part of the chapter. No way. It would probably piss Miss Priss off if I did. With her medals, she posed with her hands on her hips, and smiled a fake smile. You know, the kind of smile you see in movies that go *bling* with a sound effect.

I could've been a smart ass and stooped down to her level, but I didn't. This post serves no justice to what I was feeling earlier. I guess I'm over it...maybe just a little. But I can't wait to see her again, and I'll let Miss-Know-It-All know that I've been a member all along.

The only good that came out of her is that she motivates me to start running again, and it's not because she ran at the track meet...

    I Got Tagged!!

What are the things you enjoy, even when no one around you wants to go out and play?

**There's nothing like the aroma of freshly brewed coffee in the morning on my days off. I'll settle on the sofa while I read the paper or watch TV.

**I like taking naps on a dog day afternoon with the window open to let the cool breeze in.

    **Writing in my journal.

**I love walking through Target, even if I don't buy anything.

**Watching "Lizzy Maguire", "Lilo and Stitch", and "Even Stevens" on the Disney Channel on a Sunday afternoon.

    Random Thought

    What Happens When You Procrastinate

I skipped out on hula class tonight because I have to finish my exam paper that's due tomorrow. It's a subjective paper, so I figure, I really can't go wrong. I'm just not feeling the topic, though. That makes it all the more difficult to write.

Three feet away from me is my copy of Harry Potter, still wrapped in its box. I promised myself that I wouldn't open it until my paper is finished, printed, and put away in my notebook.

Missing out on hula sucks. It's my time with the girls, and I love dancing hula. But hey, I put myself in this situation.

    Arghh!!

    Coffee & a Local Band

Okay, no more coffee for me at ten in the evening. I nearly yelled at my bro tonight when I told him of the local band Sinta and I watched at a local coffee shop on Castro. We decided to check out the cafe to see if there were any bands playing, and sure enough, when we got there, the band was setting up. The members of the eight-guy band, we assume, were home from their freshman year of college. They were really good! And their sound is different. Imagine a metal/punk band with a horn section. They even played a ska version of a Judas Priest cover. It was great! I like the fact that there is a small venue like this one that gives the opportunity for local acts to perform at.

    Harry Potter Held Hostage

I pre-ordered my copy of Harry Potter 6 last Sunday through Amazon so that it will arrive today, its release date. I was expecting the package to be here on the doorstep or something, but what I found was a notice saying that my parcel is at the post office for pick-up. Rats! When I ordered Book 5 last year, the package was left at the doorstep. That's okay, though. Book 6 is safe at the post office. Oh, so near, yet so far. I can't pick it up until Monday.

Our local post office is open 24 hours. It has a kiosk where you can buy stamps, weigh and send out your packages. There should be a way to pick up packages in the middle of the night--like gnomes working the graveyard shift. When they're not travelling or tending to people's gardens, they distribute precious parcel--like my Book 6--during the night when the counters are closed. Then I could get my book.

I have to wait until Monday afternoon. Oh, the torture!

    I'm A Winner!

I never win anything. Contests, drawings and the like? Nope, never win them.

We just recently transitioned to a new database program; and before then, we were quite busy practicing how to use the new system. Part of our practice was to make mock accounts. In turn, those accounts would be our "entries" to a drawing. For every account we complete, we get one entry. I probably had about eight entries at the most. The prizes: 20 $25 gift certificates. We had the drawing today during our party (our award for all the hard work). Guess who won a gift certificate out of 300+ entries? Yup, the one who never wins!

My Target gift card will be well spent! I love Target!

    TGIF!!

It's Friday again, and I can breathe a sigh of relief, as I forget about the work week. I'm so looking forward to the weekend, especially since the weather's been nice and warm lately. As always, I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend!

    I...

I need to get my hair trimmed.
I have a new found fear of snakes.
I can't wait for the latest "Harry Potter" to arrive on my doorstep.
I don't remember the last time I cooked a meal.
I finally caught up with my "Daily Reads" (blogs).
I've been watching a lot of late night TV--"Mash" and "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody".
